I’ve been told to leave town
before sundown
more times than I care to explain.
Why, I’ve been asked by bridegrooms
to get a move on real soon
and it was always way too soon when I saw ‘em again.
But, ooo those ladies
would say, “ Won’t you stay please?
You’re talking so sweet I don’t feel like going home.”
And then their daddies
would say, “ Boy, you’ve had it!
I’m gonna have to make sure you leave my daughter alone.”
I’m packing quickly
and leaving quietly.
Hopefully, I can get unharmed.
I heard some talk from downtown
like, if they ever saw me around
someone was gonna rearrange my charms!
And all I did was
take her out dancing.
I can’t imagine why everyone’s so upset.
I hardly held her,
didn’t even tell her
I thought she was awfully different from all of the rest.
Well, I’m headed nowhere
but I don’t really care
cause anywhere is better than what I’ve seen.
I only came to this town
cause the name had the same sound
as a girl I knew from New Orleans.
But her older brother
said one way or the other
he was gonna introduce my face to his fist.
Until his sister
heard how much I’d missed her.
She protected me like Pocahontas and John Smith.
